You might say music is in Tori Kelly’s blood—and practically since birth, her star has been steadily on the rise. A daughter of two musicians, the California native started singing at age 3, appeared in TV singing competitions as a child, and started drumming at 12. At age 14, she posted her first cover video on YouTube—a rendition of Paramore’s ‘Only Exception’—and in 2012 saw her take on Frank Ocean’s ‘Thinking About You’ go viral with 22 million views. That year she released a fully DIY (self-written, produced, and mixed) EP, the aptly named ‘Handmade Songs By Tori Kelly’. Her very first live show attracted the notice of Scooter Braun, Justin Bieber’s manager. Impressed by her sweetly soaring vocals, breezy melodies, and heart-on-sleeve lyrics, he signed her and snagged her a record deal.
In 2013 Tori released the EP ‘Foreword’, featuring the single ‘Dear No One’. Since then, she’s opened for artists like Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, headlined her own nine-city sold-out U.S. tour and been named an MTV Artist to Watch. Now she’s all set to release her full debut album which features the infectious single ‘Nobody Love.’ Tori calls the track ‘the style of music I always envisioned myself doing: urban pop with a hip-hop type of Lauryn Hill twist on it.’ With the song starting to create a huge buzz, MTV have named Tori May’s PUSH act! Stay tuned to find out more about this incredibly multitalented singer-songwriter.
